What is easy to forget about that day is that nobody knew if it was all over. Now it's all neatly encapsulated as "the events of Sept. 11." But at the time, nobody knew if Sept. 12 might be worse. Or if the bridges might be blown up in the middle of the night. The phrase "anything is possible" suddenly lost its utopian flavor.
