9.11 and after

Sept. 12, 7:30 p.m.
Lower Manhattan from the Q train, going over the Manhattan Bridge from Brooklyn.

When I first came to New York I lived in Tribeca, six blocks north of the towers. Most buildings around my apartment were a hundred years old and no more than six stories tall. The towers hung over them like something from another planet. You could almost feel their gravitational pull. I liked them best when it was overcast and they went right up into the clouds, glowing softly.
