Sept. 15
Memorials in Union Square.
By the time I visited the square it had already become a bit of a circus, complete with a noisy self-important preacher.
There were posters all along the walkways through Union Square Park, some sent by people all over the country and the world, expressing sorrow and regrets and solidarity.
Two weeks later the Parks Department cleared all of this away, apparently feeling it was time to move on. The anti-war graffiti was scrubbed off the statue of George Washington. Some signs and flowers and candles remained in a small cluster at the southern end of the square.
